Artists of the Spirit: New Prophets in Art and Mysticism
Published in Paperback by Brotherhood of Life Books (November, 1994)
Authors: Mary Carroll Nelson, Peggy MacKenzie, and Anne MacKenzie
Average review score:

Artists of the Spirit presents 16 biographies of wise people
When faced with life-changing events, sixteen artists and seers (whose stories I tell in ARTISTS OF THE SPIRIT, New Prophets in Art and Mysticism) reacted creatively and also altruistically to put their new insights at the service of others. They are models of highly aware persons who act as scouts for the rest of us. Their stories suggest that in the contemporary phase of human evolution, it is our creative imagination that continues to expand, leading us upward toward what Teilhard de Chardin called "the Omega point," where spirit will illuminate mind.

At Home in Creativity: The Naturalistic Theology of Henry Nelson Wieman
Published in Paperback by Skinner House Books (May, 1995)
Author: Bruce Southworth
Average review score:

What was old is new again: Wieman for our times.
Henry Nelson Wieman is not everyone's cup of tea. As Creighton Peden said in his introduction to SCIENCE SERVING FAITH -- a collection of Wieman's essays, "The experience of God is not knowledge of God, and knowledge of God is what Wieman initially is seeking." Wieman is rational and empirical through and through and people seeking for a more moist approach to spirituality will find Wieman dry as toast. Yet, and this is a big yet, this dryness has the crystalline quality of a cloudless sky and the austere elegance of a single-malt Scotch. Wieman is not bloodless, rather relentlessly singleminded in his pursuit of conceptual clarity when it comes to what he calls The Source of Human Good.

Wieman's God is transpersonal but not supernatural, a process within the universe rather than the universal creator. God, for Wieman, is the character of the universe -- a creative, integrating, pushing and pulling into greater wholes of greater value. Not terribly touchy-feely, granted, but for those of us whose faith must be solidly grounded in intellectual clarity and credibility, Wieman is a faithful guide and a constant inspiration.

AT HOME IN CREATIVITY succeeds in presenting Wieman's thought in a concise and eminently readable form at the same time as it holds it up against such contemporary trends as theologies of liberation and creation spirituality. And while Wieman did not participate in these trends -- his writing spans the middle fifty years of the 20th century -- and he could legitimately be considered naive when it comes to his optimism about societal reform, Wieman still holds his own as a partner in today's religious dialogue.

Bruce Southworth was my pastor at the Community Church of New York (Unitarian-Universalist) for the year or so I was a member before moving to Kentucky. At the time my interest in Wieman was not as acute as today. Even so I recall Rev. Southworth's sermons, personal style, and integrity as every bit as committed to the value of human creative interaction as Wieman would have wanted to see in a religious leader of the newer generation.

Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder at Home and at School
Published in Paperback by Writer's Showcase Press (October, 2000)
Authors: Patricia R. Nelson and Helen R. Nelson
Average review score:

Help for Parents and Teachers
When I first opened Attention, I was pleased not to have to go through pages of gobbledygook to get to the information I needed.  Attention promotes teacher parent cooperation to assist ADHD students in learning. The book offers easy to understand stategies and techniques in behavior modification for both teacher and parent, suggests helpful ways to deal with learning disabilities in a variety of classroom subjects and suggests parenting skills to make the home environment less stressful. Medication is discussed and is used as a tool to attain success. The premise is that neither behavior modification or medication will work in isolation. It is a middle of the road approach.

Student examples are somewhat hard to read but the differences before help and after help are obvious. ADHD check lists to identify the hyperactivity disorder are clear and not ambiguous. The sample school letter on page 154 is excellent.

Thank you for this helpful book.

Very Thought Provoking!!
If you only buy one theology book in your life this is the one to buy. The author uses a narrative approach in order to help the reader understand how our spiritual forefathers wrestled with understanding the scriptures. I would highly recommend this work to anyone that is interested in the house church movement or just looking for great theology book. A Believers Church Theology will inspire you to go deeper and appreciate our spiritual heritage.

Beloved Chicago Man Letters to Nelson Al
Published in Hardcover by Trafalgar Square ()
Author: Simone De Beauvoir
Average review score:

Exactly the same as "Transatlantic Love Affair"
This a great book, which really shows the true character of Simone de Beauvoir. See the many positive reviews of "A Transatlantic Love Affair"- it is the same book. "Beloved Chicago Man" is merely the title by this British publisher. Don't get both!

Bereavement Ministry Program: A Comprehensive Guide for Churches
Published in Spiral-bound by Ave Maria Press (March, 1998)
Authors: Jan C. Nelson and David A. Aaker
Average review score:

Book a must for all churches
The Bereavement Ministry is a must for all churches. The text contains guidelines and suggestions for dealing with a variety of grief situations: suicide, still births, natural deaths, tragic deaths, teen deaths, just to list a few. I recently used the book when a teenager in our church was killed in an accident. We were able to give the teens information about greif and how it might be manifested. We were able to give the parents information about how their children might experience grief and how the two groups could work together for a healthier mourning process. The book also contains samples of follow-up letters that can be sent to those in mourning. There are twelve letters, one for each month of the year following the death of a loved on. As a pastor, I wish I never needed this book, but reality is that death happens and this book is worth the cost to help our people mourn and handle grief.

Best Hikes With Dogs in Western Washington (Best Hikes With Dogs)
Published in Unknown Binding by Mountaineers Books (E) (September, 2002)
Author: Dan A. Nelson
Average review score:

Droopy gives it four paws
Eighty dog-friendly hikes will keep you busy all year. Textual descriptions walk you through the trails, giving you a step-by-step description of what to expect. Also included is the mileage, hiking time, elevation gain, best hiking months for the trail, contour map, ranger district contact information, and photos. The only downside is that the directions to the trail are incorporated into the textual description -- this makes for a seamless description of getting to and hiking on the trail, but a little cumbersome for actual driving. However, Droopy the Explorer Dog definitely recommends this winner!
